Tiger conservation circles/ general public are in uproar over the weekend murder of two young adult tigers in Ranthambhore reserved areas - poisened by a couple of Gujjars living in the reserve as revenge for killing two of their goats (Probably three going by the latest reports emanating from the premier tiger reserve of the country)
Three goats = Rs 3000 / USD 60 even at an aggressive price tag of 1000 rupees per goat.
3000 is big money for these villagers ; probably their lifeline.
Two tigers were nothing, worthless for them.
Why blame them when all they have got from tigers is loss of livelihood.
Oh by the way, Rs 3000 is one-twelfth of what I spend in Ranthambhore last time I was there to shoot Machali and her ilk.

60 Crore is a very conservative estimate of the total revenue the 40 odd tigers in Ranthambhore brings in per year. That is 1.5 crore per tiger per year. That is 25+ crore over an average life span of 12 years. That is around 15 crore present value at 10% discount rate. That is 30 crore across the two dead tigers.
3000 rupees = 300000000 rupees !
Why isn't the answer obvious ?..
Anyone who thinks we can conserve tigers by huge billboards in Mumbai is smoking dope. Anyone who thinks we can conserve tigers by not leveraging it's tourist potential and creating system of equitable distribution to people around the reserves / tribals is smoking dope too !
